2004 Cena za celoživotní přínos Ron Mann (Kanada)

Ron Mann is an award-winning filmmaker and counterculture stalwart, who has been documenting and dissecting alternative culture for almost thirty years. His documentaries often focus on the role of dissent and outsiders within the broad panorama of popular culture. Among his best-known films are "Grass" (about the history of marijuana use in North America) and "Comic Book Confidential" (a social history of the world of comic books), both of which received the Genie Award for Best Documentary from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. His legendary film "Imagine the Sound" has been described as the definitive documentary on the politics and philosophy of the free jazz movement, and the equally well-regarded "Twist" is a stylish and penetrating examination of not only a dance trend but also the subtle nuances of race relations in American popular music. Mann is respected in the documentary film community for his ability to express his point of view subtly and convincingly but with great humor. This sense of playfulness extends to the style of his editing and his use of eclectic and sometimes bizarre juxtapositions of archival material, and is often employed as a means to subversively get across a more serious political message.

"That is why film is also really important – in order to be reminded that people can effect change. They can change politics. They can change the direction. They can express their dissatisfaction. They can make the world that they want to live in."
